Marrakech Makes Culinary History with the World’s Largest Tangia at the Museum of Moroccan Culinary Art

On June 12, 2025, Marrakech lit up with emotion and celebration as the city paid homage to its rich culinary and cultural heritage. As part of the Festival of Popular Music and Gastronomy, the Musée de l’Art Culinaire Marocain welcomed a historic moment: the unveiling of the largest tangia ever prepared in Marrakech.

This extraordinary feat was led by the legendary Bana, a revered icon of local culture and the living embodiment of Marrakchi culinary expertise. With ancestral gestures, deep-burning embers, and unwavering passion, Bana brought to life a monumental tangia that honored the spirit of communal tradition and authentic flavors. It was more than just a meal — it was a cultural triumph.

A Monumental Parade: From Kasbah to Museum

The journey began at the Moulay Yazid Mosque in the heart of the Kasbah. The giant tangia was paraded through the winding alleys of the medina, accompanied by vibrant celebrations and the powerful rhythms of Dakka Marrakchia troupes — a UNESCO-recognized intangible heritage. The procession transformed into a public performance, a moving celebration of Marrakchi soul and pride.

At 6 PM, as dusk settled over the ochre city, Bana arrived at the museum gates to a thunderous ovation. Every beat of the drum echoed a tradition passed down through generations. Each step of the procession reaffirmed a deep connection between culinary ritual and cultural identity.

Founded in 2019 within an 18th-century palace in the medina, the Musée de l’Art Culinaire Marocain stands as a beacon of Moroccan gastronomic excellence. Spanning over 5,000 square meters, the museum features immersive exhibits, live cooking demonstrations by traditional dadas, tastings, workshops, and a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Koutoubia Mosque.

Open daily from 9 AM to 8 PM, the museum not only preserves Moroccan culinary traditions but also celebrates them with elegance and generosity — just like the tangia of June 12.

In bringing together locals, visitors, artists, and guardians of ancestral knowledge, this event reignited a shared memory: food as a cultural ritual, fire as a symbol of unity, and tradition as a living flame.
