FENDI Reimagines Its Iconic Baguette with an Emirati Touch
An Italian Icon, Reinterpreted
FENDI’s Baguette takes on a distinctly Emirati identity through a collaboration with designer Khalid Shafar and Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council. Unveiled at Al Hamriyah Studios in Sharjah, the limited edition brings traditional Talli craftsmanship into the Italian house’s familiar silhouette. Here, the story unfolds through texture, colour and the hands behind each detail.

The Hands Behind the FENDI Emirati Baguette
Twelve Emirati artisans contributed 435 hours of craftsmanship across two years to realise the design. At its centre sits Talli, a traditional technique that interlaces threads into decorative bands. Traditionally used to embellish Emirati clothing, it gives the bag a tactile connection to local dress and inherited knowledge.
Moreover, Irthi’s craftswomen participated in the design and development process, adapting their expertise to the Baguette’s proportions. Their contribution shapes the finished piece as much as its visual references.
Arabic Lettering Meets the FF
Shafar’s approach also draws on language. The Arabic letter “Fa” enters the geometric composition of FENDI’s logo, connecting Arabic lettering with the house’s recognisable visual identity.
Rather than remaining a graphic motif, this interpretation becomes a handwoven Talli pattern. As a result, lettering and craftsmanship form a shared design language across the bag’s surface.

Colours Drawn from the Landscape
The palette looks to the UAE’s natural surroundings. Deep palm green meets the softer grey and green shades of the Ghaf tree. Meanwhile, mustard and gold recall blossoms and desert sunlight, with silver threads referencing traditional Talli materials.
Dark green silk fringes introduce movement across the body and strap. A clasp with gold detailing and dark green enamel completes the composition.
A Purpose Beyond the Piece
Beyond its design, the collaboration carries a humanitarian dimension. Part of the proceeds will support The Big Heart Foundation’s initiatives for refugees and vulnerable communities worldwide.
Heritage in Contemporary Form
The FENDI Emirati Baguette offers a thoughtful meeting of a familiar fashion silhouette and a craft passed between generations. Above all, its interest lies in the detail: woven lettering, landscape references and the expertise of the women who brought them together.
