Comediablanca: Casablanca’s Comedy Renaissance Goes Global

In the heart of Casablanca, where tradition meets creativity, a cultural transformation is taking shape. It is not quiet, nor is it conventional. It is loud, joyful, and unafraid to challenge the status quo. This is Comediablanca, Morocco’s most dynamic comedy festival, now entering its highly anticipated second edition. More than an event, Comediablanca is emerging as a powerful cultural platform. It nurtures talent, fosters dialogue, and connects Morocco to the international comedy scene.

Founded by Saad Lahjouji and Myriam Bouayad, the festival began as an ambitious project to elevate humor as an art form that is both refined and accessible. The first edition was a resounding success, revealing a large audience and an impressive reservoir of talent. What started as a local initiative has evolved into a bold, far-reaching endeavor.

This year’s edition signals a new chapter, one of expansion and deeper impact.

A Festival That Lives Beyond the Stage

At the heart of the experience is the Village Comediablanca, more than a performance venue. It is an immersive cultural space where comedy, craftsmanship, gastronomy, and relaxation come together. Curated by artistic director Amir Rouani, the village includes a local creators’ market, a chill zone, a food court offering global flavors, and a gaming area featuring live improvisation. Each corner is designed to reflect the spirit of Casablanca as a city of innovation, openness, and storytelling.

Building the Future of Moroccan Comedy

Comediablanca is not only about performances. It is about creating a sustainable future for Moroccan comedians. Through a strategic partnership with the Fondation Hiba, the festival offers a comprehensive artist development program. Participants benefit from residencies, masterclasses led by international professionals, and post-festival mentorship. These efforts aim to create a structured and professional ecosystem for comedy in Morocco.

Amir Rouani emphasizes that the goal is not just to entertain. It is to elevate humor as a tool for empowerment, connection, and cultural expression.

A Lineup That Reflects Cultural Depth

The 2025 edition features a diverse and high-caliber lineup. On May 30, the Arabophone Gala brings together iconic figures like Hanane Fadili, digital sensation Ghita Kitane, and rising stars such as Ayoub Idri and Oussama Ramzi. On May 31, the Francophone Gala highlights international acts including Roman Frayssinet, Coco Makmak, Erick Baert, and Meryem Benoua.

Young talents such as Sarah Lélé, Ethan Lallouz, and Mimo Lazrak also take the stage, offering fresh perspectives and cross-cultural humor that resonates with today’s global audience.

From Local Ambition to Global Vision

Comediablanca is setting its sights beyond Casablanca. Plans are in motion to extend the festival to other Moroccan cities and later into other parts of Africa and Europe. The aim is to position Morocco as a leading hub for Francophone and Arabophone humor.

Comedy With a Social Impact

Comediablanca is rooted in a strong belief that humor is more than entertainment. It is a vital social tool. The festival promotes inclusion, dialogue, and artistic excellence, helping to shift public narratives and open space for new voices.

As Saad Lahjouji puts it, “Comediablanca is not a destination. It is a starting point.”

From Casablanca, a new language of laughter is being written. It is bold, inclusive, and deeply Moroccan.
